Idiopathic limbal squamous metaplasia.

چکیده
Squamous metaplasia is an abnormal epithelial differentiation represented on the ocular surface by a spectrum of skin-like changes of conjunctival and corneal epithelium. This pathologic condition can be observed in a variety of ocular surface disorders, including systemic vitamin A deficiency and cicatricial keratoconjunctivitis. We recently encountered a patient with a progressively enlarging limbal epithelial ovoid lesion, who was given a histologic diagnosis of corneal and conjunctival squamous metaplasia of unknown cause. Herein we report this rare case and our successful surgical management of the lesion.

PURPOSE To determine the correlation between the squamous metaplasia grade of the corneal surface and the clinical severity of the limbal deficiency in patients with this disorder. METHODS We studied 98 eyes of patients with limbal deficiency by impression cytology. These patients were divided into four groups in relation to their clinical severity: 14 eyes had no symptoms, 34 eyes showed a m...
متن کاملMolecular profile of organ culture-stored corneal epithelium: LGR5 is a potential new phenotypic marker of residual human corneal limbal epithelial stem cells.
Long-term preservation of corneal limbal epithelium may decrease its quality and change the molecular signature of the limbal epithelial stem cells. In this study we have investigated the molecular profile of isolated corneal epithelial cells that have been in storage for an extended time. Isolated cells were characterised by the expression profile of different cytokeratins and markers of squam...
متن کاملAir exposure induced squamous metaplasia of human limbal epithelium.
PURPOSE Squamous metaplasia is a pathologic process that frequently occurs in nonkeratinized stratified ocular surface epithelia. The mechanism for this occurrence is largely unknown except for vitamin A deficiency. METHODS Human limbal explants were cultured under airlift with or without p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor SB203580 or in a submerged manner for different dur...
متن کاملRetinoic acid regulates clonal growth and differentiation of cultured limbal and peripheral corneal epithelium.
PURPOSE To determine if vitamin A could be one of the factors in serum responsible for the previously observed effect of 20% fetal bovine serum on stimulating clonal growth of an additional subpopulation in limbal cultures, possibly stem cells, but inhibiting that of transient amplifying cells in peripheral corneal cultures. METHODS A reported serum-free clonal growth assay was used. The mito...
متن کاملImpression cytology and in vivo confocal microscopy in corneas with total limbal stem cell deficiency.
PURPOSES To describe corneal changes seen on in vivo confocal microscopy in patients with total limbal stem cell deficiency and to correlate them with cytological findings. METHODS A prospective case series including 13 eyes (8 patients) with total limbal deficiency was carried out. Stem cell deficiency was diagnosed clinically and by corneal impression cytology. Confocal images of the centra...
